Leg clots (deep vein thrombosis): symptoms and prevention

What deep vein thrombosis is, who is most at risk, why it needs prompt treatment, and prevention tips for long journeys.

Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot in one of the deep veins, usually in the leg. The danger is that part of it can travel to the lungs, which is an emergency.

Symptoms

  • Swelling, usually of one leg.
  • Pain or tightness in the calf.
  • Warmth or redness of the skin.
Sudden shortness of breath, chest pain or coughing blood with leg symptoms are emergency signs: go to the nearest hospital immediately.

Who is most at risk?

  • After major surgery, especially orthopaedic operations.
  • Long periods of immobility, such as bed rest or long journeys.
  • Pregnancy, after childbirth, and some hormonal medications.
  • Cancer and some inherited clotting disorders.

Diagnosis and treatment

Diagnosis is made by Doppler of the leg veins. Treatment is mainly anticoagulant medication for a period set by the doctor; in selected cases a catheter is used to dissolve or remove the clot. Follow-up reduces long-term complications such as leg swelling and skin changes.

Prevention on long journeys

  • Move your feet and ankles regularly while seated.
  • Get up and walk every hour or two if possible.
  • Drink enough water.
  • If you are at higher risk, ask your doctor before travelling about compression stockings or preventive medication.
